Data Centres & Critical Facilities
Acoustic Solutions for Data Centres & Critical Facilities
Data centres and critical facilities present unique acoustic challenges, with continuous equipment operation, extensive building services and hard reflective surfaces contributing to elevated noise and reverberation.
Acoustics Asia provides practical acoustic treatment solutions in Malaysia, from material planning and specification support through to supply and professional installation.

Acoustic Control in Technically Demanding Environments
Data centres combine continuous mechanical and electrical operation with highly serviced building environments. Cooling systems, equipment, generators and other infrastructure can contribute to significant sound levels, while large areas of hard surfaces can increase reflected sound within a space.
Effective acoustic control begins by identifying the type of problem being addressed. Acoustic absorption, sound insulation and mechanical noise control perform different functions and should not be treated as interchangeable solutions.
Sound Absorption
Reduces reflected sound and reverberation within a space using absorptive materials such as acoustic panels, baffles and ceiling treatments.
Sound Insulation
Reduces sound transmission between spaces or through building elements such as walls, ceilings, doors and partitions.
Mechanical Noise Control
Addresses noise generated or transmitted by mechanical equipment and building services. Depending on the source, specialist M&E or mechanical noise-control measures may also be required.
Acoustic Treatment Across Data Centres & Critical Facilities
Acoustic requirements vary according to the facility, equipment, room function and project specification. Acoustics Asia can support acoustic treatment requirements across technical and occupied areas including:
Data Halls
Acoustic absorption to help control reflected equipment noise and reverberation where treatment is specified.
Plant & Equipment Spaces
Durable absorptive treatments for technically demanding environments where excessive reflected sound requires control.
Technical & Service Areas
Wall, ceiling and suspended acoustic systems selected around available surfaces and building services.
Control & Operations Rooms
Acoustic treatment designed to improve the internal acoustic environment within occupied operational spaces.
Offices & Support Spaces
Architectural acoustic treatments where speech, communication and occupant comfort are important.
Project-Specific Areas
Treatment based on acoustic consultant specifications, architectural drawings, BQs or identified project requirements.
From Acoustic Requirement to Practical Treatment
Every data centre project has different acoustic, architectural and installation constraints. Rather than applying a single acoustic product to every environment, we consider the purpose of the treatment, required acoustic performance, available installation area and project conditions.
We can assist with requirements involving excessive reverberation, reflected equipment noise, acoustic absorption targets, wall and ceiling treatment, suspended acoustic systems and acoustic material selection.
Where noise originates from mechanical equipment, vibration, ductwork or other building services, additional specialist engineering measures may be required alongside architectural acoustic treatment.
Acoustic Treatment Systems for Data Centre Applications
Acoustic treatment systems can be selected according to the required performance, available installation area, project specification and surrounding building services.
Polyester Fibre Acoustic Panels
Lightweight absorptive panels suitable for wall, ceiling and suspended applications. PET systems are available in various thicknesses, dimensions and configurations depending on project requirements.
Suspended Acoustic Baffles
Vertical acoustic absorbers provide additional absorption while retaining access around ceilings and building services, making them suitable for highly serviced environments where conventional ceiling coverage may be limited.
Acoustic Ceiling Clouds & Rafts
Suspended horizontal absorbers can provide targeted acoustic absorption while allowing treatment to be coordinated around lighting, M&E services and other ceiling infrastructure.
Fabric-Wrapped Acoustic Panels
Fabric acoustic panels provide high-performance absorption with greater flexibility in finishes, making them particularly suitable for control rooms, offices and other occupied areas where acoustic performance and appearance are both important.

From Specification to Installation
Acoustics Asia supports acoustic treatment projects from the initial requirement through to material supply and installation.

04 — Install
Our installation team carries out the acoustic works with consideration for site conditions, coordination requirements and the specified treatment layout.
Designed Around Services, Access & Installation Constraints
Data centres and critical facilities are highly serviced environments. Cable containment, ductwork, pipework, sprinklers, lighting, structural elements and other M&E services can significantly affect where and how acoustic treatment can be installed.
Acoustic treatment therefore needs to be considered not only for its acoustic performance, but also for its fixing method, suspension arrangement, accessibility and coordination with surrounding services.
Acoustics Asia considers these practical installation requirements when reviewing proposed acoustic treatment so that the selected system can be implemented effectively on site.
Selecting the Right Acoustic Treatment
The appropriate acoustic system depends on more than panel thickness alone. Material selection and treatment design may consider:
Acoustic Absorption Performance
Including NRC or other specified absorption requirements.
Material Thickness & Density
Selected according to the required system and acoustic performance.
Treatment Coverage
The quantity and distribution of absorptive material required within the space.
Mounting Configuration
Including direct-fixed, suspended, baffle, raft or other arrangements.
Fire Performance
Materials selected according to project and regulatory requirements where applicable.
Installation Environment
Including access, working height, surrounding services and fixing conditions.
Project Specification
Compliance with consultant, architect, contractor or client requirements where specified.

Frequently Asked Questions
What acoustic treatments are commonly used in data centres?
Depending on the acoustic requirement, treatments may include wall-mounted absorptive panels, suspended acoustic baffles, ceiling clouds or rafts and other acoustic absorption systems. The appropriate treatment depends on the noise source, room conditions, required performance and project specification.
Are acoustic panels the same as soundproofing?
No. Acoustic panels primarily absorb reflected sound and reduce reverberation within a space. Soundproofing or sound insulation is intended to reduce sound transmission between spaces or through building elements. Different acoustic problems require different solutions.
Can acoustic baffles be installed around M&E services?
Often, yes. Suspended baffles can be useful in highly serviced environments because their layout can potentially be coordinated around ductwork, cable trays, pipes and other infrastructure. Final positioning and fixing arrangements depend on site conditions and project requirements.
How do you determine how much acoustic treatment is required?
Treatment quantity depends on factors including room dimensions, existing finishes, noise sources, acoustic objectives and any specified reverberation or absorption requirements. Where an acoustic consultant has provided a specification or BQ, the treatment can also be reviewed against those requirements.
Can Acoustics Asia work from an acoustic consultant’s specification or BQ?
Yes. Clients, consultants and contractors can send us their acoustic specifications, BQs, drawings and proposed treatment layouts for review and quotation.
